Our complete Pictured Rocks paddle and hiking tour includes an impressive 14 miles of paddling. However, your arms will barely feel the burn when you’re taking in the route’s spectacular scenery. About halfway through the journey, we’ll refuel with lunch on a remote beach. Paddling Michigan’s go-to, complimentary lunch for this journey includes a wrap (chicken, turkey, ham, or veggie), chips, fruit, and a granola bar. We highly recommend you bring your own water or other beverage. Lunch is enjoyed at scenic Mosquito Beach.

Our epic paddle and hike Pictured Rocks tour includes admiring numerous iconic sites, including Chapel Rock, Flower Vase, Chapel Cove, Rainbow Cave, Indian Head Rock, the famed Lovers Leap Arch, and many others. We’ll even explore the legendary Painted Coves and Mosquito River Falls. Our goal is to show you as much of the Pictured Rocks lakeshore as possible.

This hiking and kayaking adventure takes roughly as long as a typical Paddling Michigan day trip. Our guests should expect to be kayaking for about six hours total. Because it’s not an out-and-back excursion, you’ll see many more rock formations, caves, and falls than the typical day tour. At the end of the journey, we’ll hike from Chapel Beach to the trailhead. A Paddling Michigan van will be waiting to shuttle you back to your starting place.

About the Hike

Our Paddling Michigan hiking and paddling adventure includes an easy 3.1-mile-long hike amongst the picture-perfect coastal scenery of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. We’ll begin on the sand dune shores of Chapel Beach and make our way to Chapel Rock. This sandstone spire is unmistakable, with a 300-year-old white pine growing on the top. Its roots stretch all the way across an open gap to the mainland for nourishment.

After Chapel Rock, we’ll take a short walk up the well-maintained Chapel Trail, which meanders along the Chapel River. We’ll reach the picture-perfect Chapel Lake, a keyhole lake formed by glacial activity. It’s surrounded by 60- to 80-foot-tall sandstone cliffs and still feels as remote as the day it was formed. Chapel Lake is fed by Chapel Falls. The 60-foot-tall cascading waterfall is one of the most remote and spectacular falls in the region.

The remainder of the hike includes a 1.5-mile-long journey through old maple forests sprinkled with beech trees and white pines. Wildlife sightings are common in these woods and may include northern white-tailed deer, grouse, rare bird species, and the occasional bear. Our guides and former guests argue that the hiking portion of the journey is equally as impressive as the paddle.
