Battleship Row

As you paddle along the towering cliffs of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, there’s a moment just before you reach Chapel Beach when something powerful comes into view. This is a formation known as Battleship Row. It was named that for its distinct resemblance to the sterns of massive warships lined up along the water. Battleship Row is a naturally occurring rock formation along the lakeshore where the sandstone cliffs jut out in a repeating pattern. Each section shaped and eroded in such a way that they look like the backs of battleships docked in formation. The effect is especially dramatic when viewed from the water. And it’s one of the many reasons why kayaking is the best way to see Pictured Rocks.

These formations are the result of centuries of erosion from Lake Superior’s powerful waves, freeze-thaw cycles, and glacial history. Over time, the sandstone fractures and falls away in chunks, which leaves behind hard angles and sharp lines that resemble the industrial design of ships.

Battleship Row is located just west of Chapel Beach. Because of this, it is one of the most beloved rest spots along the shoreline. The formation is only visible from the water and cannot be accessed by hiking trails, making it an exclusive highlight for paddlers.

You’ll pass right alongside this formation on our Paddle & Hike Tour. This gives you time to take in the cliffs from below. Then, you will explore Chapel Beach and nearby waterfalls on foot. It really is visually striking.  the sharp edges and rhythmic repetition of the rock make it stand out.
