The kayaks are racked. The last tour has landed at Miners Beach. And up here in the U.P., the woods are doing what they do every fall: turning on the color while Lake Superior gets a little moodier by the day.
To everyone who paddled with us this year: thank you. We loved having you out on the water, and we can't wait to see you again next season. For everyone who has been dreaming about those cliffs, here is the good news. Fall is the best time to plan next summer, and right now it comes with early bird pricing.

What fall brings to the U.P.
Our paddling season wraps up as fall arrives, and the reason is Lake Superior itself. Around August 20 the wind starts to pick up, and it can stay a problem through the fall. In early summer the lake usually calms down quickly after a windy day. As fall approaches, it can take a couple of days.
Around Au Train Beach, Mother Nature treats the area to a blaze of color during late summer and early fall.
The Northern Lights are most prominent in spring and fall. Stay up late in summer, though, and they are often visible then too.
Paddler's Village sits right on Lake Superior, which makes it a great spot for stargazing and, if you're lucky, a peek at the Northern Lights.
Our lodging offers early and late season discounts, so the edges of the season can stretch your budget further.

Picking your 2027 dates
- The best time to kayak Pictured Rocks is June 15 through August 20. Perfect weather is never guaranteed on Lake Superior, but mid-summer gives you the best shot at it.
- Give yourself 2 to 3 days in the area. Weather systems move from west to east, and the lake calms down quickly, especially early in summer. If waves keep us off Pictured Rocks one day, we can usually go the following day or so. We get out on the water at Pictured Rocks more than 90% of summer days.
- Book summer dates early. Pictured Rocks has a short season, so booking early gives you the most dates to choose from.
A vacation package makes the 2 to 3 day plan easy, because your lodging, meals, and tour are booked together and rescheduling within your stay is simpler if the weather shifts.
Planning for kids and first-timers
No kayaking experience is needed for any of our tours. Every tour uses stable tandem sea kayaks, guides teach paddling technique and water safety on the beach before launch, and guests must be 8 or older, with kids 15 and under paddling alongside an adult.

A gift for the paddler on your list
The holidays are coming, and a Pictured Rocks kayak tour is a gift that gets people outside together. Early bird vouchers make an easy present: buy at the sale price now, and the person you're gifting picks the date that works for them. Vouchers are good for the number of people they were purchased for, so you can gift a tour for two, or for the whole crew.
Unplugged. In the moment. Together. That is what a summer at Pictured Rocks is all about, and it starts with a plan made in the fall.
