Adventure Awaits for Family Beach Days

The town of Munising, MI always has a new way to bring people outdoors and into the beauty of the area. From Fourth of July festivities to “Every Kid in a Park” programs, you know there’s always something to do when you reach these beaches.

Now, the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is hosting another exciting and family-friendly event – Family Beach Days. Pack a lunch and wear a bathing suit to fully appreciate this event. It happens every other Saturday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 pm, and every program is created to be fun for kids and parents alike. During this new event, families can spend precious time together learning about nature and what makes the area unique on all of Munising’s amazing beaches.

Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore Programs

What’s better than playing on the beach? Learning on the beach! We know that being outside is good for you, but summer often means kids stop learning. Teach your children that learning is a lifelong adventure with help from the park rangers at the National Shoreline. Though being together is its own joy, your family will be excited to learn about the various topics covered. They include:

  • Pebbles and Rocks, August 4 at Miners Beach
  • Colors of Nature, August 18 at Miners Beach
  • Superior Birds, September 1 at Sand Point Beach

These program activities offer story time, active play, and a craft – something for the busy kids and the ones who like to create.

Park rangers have already seen successful turnouts for such programs, and participants included a range of ages with both parents and children participating in discussions. It’s a nice way to learn about the beach while enjoying time on the Lakeshore. Keep in mind, too, that Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore has other exciting programs including hikes that focus on maritime history, coyotes, and beavers. You and your kids can even hike with a ranger to learn the hidden secrets of the forest and its ecosystem.

Whether you live in the Upper Peninsula or are visiting the area, these programs are great opportunities that get kids away from screens and into the wonders of nature. Plan your vacay – or staycay – around some of these events. Budding geologists, biologists, and young marine enthusiasts will have the time of their lives in picturesque serenity.
