Lake Michigamme
Michigamme, Michigan
7 hours (variable)
Lake Michigamme, in western Marquette County is one of Michigan’s largest natural lakes. Its rocky 95-mile shoreline includes several islands that paddlers may stop for lunch or a rest. Loons, bald eagles, black bear, and even moose are in the area and may be seen. The lake is around 7 miles long and about 4 miles long in the north to south arm. Lake Michigamme is especially great paddling during the fall color season. The water is still warm and the leaves are stunning. If you can catch that short period of time when the red sugar maples are in display and the Aspen trees are golden brown, white birch, and the green background of the pine and spruce the colors are all in view the colors are vibrant. This is a wonderful family experience from June through September.
This is a day paddle of about 6 hours with a 1 hour lunch break. Departure is from the Van Riper State Park or the Mt. Shasta Lodge at 9:00 AM . Van Riper State Park is also an excellent campground if you wish to do some camping before or after your paddling.
